The DOI Registry
Every DOI Smart Scholars is responsible for — the master record it was registered with, where it resolves, and everything that has ever changed about it. Open to look up, name by name.

test — names given under a prefix Smart Scholars operates for trials; live — names registered for the world (today through Crossref, under the registrant's own prefix); retired — no new names, every existing one kept and resolving.
How it works
One record per DOI. A DOI is registered here with a record in the Smart Scholars DOI Metadata Format 1.0 — every element of the DOI Kernel (ISO 26324) and what journals and indexes need beside them — and with the address it resolves to. The record is checked against every rule of the format before it is accepted.
Nothing is ever deleted. A DOI name, once given, is never given again. A DOI whose content is gone is withdrawn: its record stays, and the resolver shows a tombstone page that says why. Every registration, every change of the record or the address, every withdrawal and restoration is a numbered entry in the ledger, with who did it and exactly which fields changed — and the ledger is only ever added to.
For registrants. The registrant's handbook — a DOI in five steps, keeping it right, withdraw and transfer, fees and timings — on one page (1 Oct 2026).
Open to check. Any DOI's record page and history are public. Programs read the same through the API and the resolver's content negotiation. The full rules — naming, states, the ledger, resolution, transfers — are on the rules page; what the registry promises registrants and readers is on the policies page, and how it keeps every record right on the quality page; the nightly escrow set is published for anyone to keep.
Until Smart Scholars is accredited as a DOI Registration Agency, the DOIs held here are registered with the DOI system through Crossref (the live prefixes) or exist for trials only (the test prefixes); the registry is the master store either way.
